PPGI Roofing Sheet
A PPGI roofing sheet is a pre-painted galvanized steel sheet specifically roll-formed into roofing profiles such as corrugated, trapezoidal, or standing seam. PPGI stands for Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron. The base material is a hot-dip galvanized steel coil (GI) which provides corrosion resistance through its zinc coating. An additional paint layer (polyester, PVDF, or epoxy) is applied to one or both sides, offering both aesthetic appeal and enhanced protection against UV radiation, moisture, and mechanical damage.
The manufacturing process involves uncoiling a PPGI coil (already painted) and passing it through a roll-forming machine to create the desired roofing profile. The finished sheet combines the strength of steel, the corrosion protection of zinc, and the decorative, weather-resistant finish of paint.
Key properties include excellent corrosion resistance (the zinc layer plus paint layer provide double protection), lightweight (typically 4–8 kg per square meter depending on thickness), high strength-to-weight ratio, and easy installation. PPGI roofing sheets are available in a wide range of colors (e.g., red, blue, green, grey, white) and profiles (corrugated, ribbed, tile-like). They are also recyclable.
Typical standards: EN 10169 (European), ASTM A755 (American), JIS G3312 (Japanese), and AS/NZS 2728 (Australian/New Zealand). Common base steel grades: DX51D, SGCC, or CS Type B. Zinc coating weights: Z80 to Z275 (80–275 g/m²). Paint systems: polyester (PE) for general use, silicon modified polyester (SMP) for better durability, and PVDF for premium UV resistance and long life (25+ years).
Applications: residential and industrial roofing, warehouse roofs, agricultural buildings (sheds, barns), carports, and temporary structures.
Advantages over bare galvanized sheets: PPGI roofing sheets do not require on-site painting, offer better color retention, resist chalking and fading, and are more aesthetically pleasing. They are also more resistant to chemical corrosion in polluted environments.
Selection guidance: For coastal or highly humid areas, choose PVDF-coated PPGI with a higher zinc coating (e.g., Z180 or Z275). For standard inland applications, polyester-coated PPGI with Z120 is sufficient. Ensure the profile matches local installation practices (e.g., corrugated for general use, trapezoidal for industrial buildings).
