Electro Galvanized Steel Coil

Product Introduction

An electro-galvanized steel coil is a cold-rolled steel sheet that has been coated with a thin layer of zinc through an electroplating process. This zinc layer serves primarily as a sacrificial anode to protect the underlying steel from corrosion.

The electroplating process is a cold, electrochemical reaction. The steel sheet is placed in an electrolyte bath containing dissolved zinc salts as the cathode (negative electrode), while a zinc anode (positive electrode) is also immersed. When an electric current is applied, zinc ions are reduced and deposit uniformly onto the steel surface, forming a dense, pure zinc coating. Because no heat is involved, the original mechanical properties and surface finish of the steel are preserved without thermal distortion.

Key properties of electro-galvanized steel include:

● Uniform and precisely controlled coating thickness, typically 5 to 10 micrometres per side, resulting in a smooth, bright, spangle-free surface.

● Excellent workability. The pure zinc coating is ductile and can withstand stamping, bending, welding and forming without cracking or peeling.

● Superior surface quality, ideal for direct painting or printing. Usually no additional surface preparation is required to achieve good paint adhesion.

● Moderate corrosion protection. The zinc layer acts as a barrier and a sacrificial anode, protecting the steel even if scratched. However, its service life depends on coating thickness, making it more suitable for indoor or mild environments.

Compared with hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel, electro-galvanized steel has a much thinner coating (5-10 µm per side versus up to 100 µm or more for HDG). Its surface is smooth, bright and zinc-spangle-free, while HDG typically has a rough, dull grey appearance with visible crystallisation patterns. Corrosion resistance is moderate, ideal for indoor or dry environments, whereas HDG offers long-term protection for outdoor exposure. Electro-galvanized steel also provides better formability and paintability and is generally less expensive per ton due to lower zinc consumption.

Major applications of electro-galvanized steel include:

● Automotive industry: over 90 percent of internal body panels, floor pans, structural parts and other components requiring weldability and excellent paint adhesion.

● Electronics and electrical equipment: computer chassis, TV back panels, copier internal parts, and various office equipment housings.

● Home appliances: refrigerator side panels, washing machine casings, microwave cavities, air conditioner shells.

● Interior building products: metal furniture, shelving, filing cabinets, door frames, lighting fixtures.
